Occupying Govt Offices & causing destruction is NOT a peaceful protest – BASL

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has condemned the recent occupation of the Prime Minister’s Office by protesters.

Issuing a statement, the BASL noted that while they continue to support the rights of peaceful protesters, situations of lawlessness and anarchy will not be tolerated.

Emphasising that such attempts to occupy Government Offices and cause destruction and damage to property do not constitute ‘peaceful protests’, the BASL urged protesters to return the Primer Minister’s Office immediately.

The BASL further appealed to the public, especially to the protesters, to “remain calm and to leave room for the peaceful transition of power which the political leaders of this country have promised”, adding that any act of violence could be used against the people, to resile on the promises made thus far.
