Colombo additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela, yesterday (12), ordered all electronic media institutions to hand over the copies of unedited videos, related to the assault on a group of journalists, in front of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence on 9 July, to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

The Additional Magistrate gave this order, having considered a request made by the CCD.

The CCD urged the Court to order the media outlets to submit unedited video footages of the said incident to them, to further streamline their probe into the case. A group of Sirasa TV journalists, namely Waruna Sampath (cameraman), Sarasi Peiris (regional correspondent), Janitha Mendis (web journalist) and Shakthi TV journalist Sindujan, who had gone to report on the tense situation which had broken out opposite the PMs private residence, on the said date, had reportedly been set upon and mercilessly assaulted by security officers on duty.

The CCD informed the Court that they have commenced a probe into the incident.

Magistrate Kekunawela advised the CCD to inquire into the incident and submit a progress report to him at the next hearing.
