China is closely monitoring the developments in Sri Lanka and said as a friendly neighbour and cooperation partner, it sincerely hopes that all sectors in Sri Lanka can keep in mind the fundamental interests of their country and people and work together in solidarity to overcome the present difficulties.

On 11 July, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said Sri Lanka should strive to restore stability, revitalise the economy, and improve people’s livelihoods as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka distributed 2,500 food packs donated by the Red Cross Society of China to underprivileged families in Nuwara Eliya.

Ambassador Qi Zhenhong attended the distribution programme held last week. Another 2,500 and 2,060 packs will be distributed in Kandy and Matale soon, he said. Also, 1,000 MT of rice donated by China to Sri Lankan students arrived in Colombo Port on 8 July and was handed over to Sri Lanka. More rice is expected in the coming weeks.
