Online Scams On The Rise – SLCERT


With the ongoing fuel crisis in the country, incidents involving theft of personal information using fake links have been reported to the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT).

SLCERT in a special communique said that in this scenario, criminals request the individuals to get registered for a Token to receive fuel and steal your sensitive personal information (such as mobile phone numbers, vehicle registration numbers, identity card numbers) during the fake registration process. Then the stolen personal information will be used for illegal activities and in some cases to create fake accounts on social media. Therefore, the SLCERT kindly requests the public to be vigilant regarding such fake messages.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of Lanka IOC Manoj Gupta said that there are different platforms conveying Lanka IOC customers to SMS their IDs, Fuel variant and the vehicle registration numbers saying that only limited supplies available. He said that these kinds of messages are absolutely fake and they never issued any such advice since adequate stocks are available at Trincomalee Terminals.
