Owing to a lack of fuel for the prison buses, the Prisons Department is experiencing difficulty in transporting prisoners to Courts.
According to Prison Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake, many Court proceedings are now being conducted online in order to avoid unexpected obstacles.
Meanwhile, prison officials had to take some of the suspects, who had been in handcuffs, by foot to the Badulla Magistrate’s Court from the prison.
Ekanayake confirmed this and said that the Badulla Prison receives fuel from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and that the Badulla Prison has not received fuel for several days, so they took the suspects in this manner after obtaining permission from the Badulla Magistrate.
He did, however, say that the fuel for the prison buses was supposed to arrive yesterday (11).
He also noted that the Badulla Magistrate’s Court was only 500 metres away from the prison and that the suspects were carefully taken to the Court because they could not afford to miss any Court proceedings.
He also claimed that inmates in Colombo are always produced in Courts online.
