Several trade unions and civil society organisations have lodged complaints with IGP Chandana Wickremaratne, urging to launch impartial probes into incidents where damages have been caused to public property, the security forces firing at protesters, causing injuries, and various other acts of violence during the mass-scale protest held on 9 July in Colombo.

They urged the IGP to carry out an unbiased investigation into the conduct of the Police during the protests and take action against those who are responsible for the offences.

They requested the IGP to probe whether the conduct of the Police has been in violation of the Constitution as well.

In the meanwhile, several trade unions and civil society organisations held a protest opposite the Police Headquarters yesterday (11), charging that the IGP had failed to prevent a brutal assault by Police on journalists on 9 July.
