BASL head turns down Presidency offer

President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris declined a proposal put forward by three former Governors to nominate him as an MP through the National List and then appoint him as the President of the interim government.

Former Governors, Maithri Gunaratne, Azath Salley and Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon, in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated that Peiris would be the ideal President considering the support he extended to the public over the past few months and as he is free from any allegations of fraud or corruption.

Pieris stressed that he has no intention to hold any political office and that the BASL only sought to extend their support to the public during a crucial time.

He noted, “During the past few months, the BASL and legal professionals were able to play an important role in the country and we will need to continue to do so at this crucial time,” he said adding, “At this time, I am happy to lead the BASL and to engage in my work and I have no intention to hold any political office.”
