Speaker clarifies that President is still in Sri Lanka

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena clarifies that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is currently in the country.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist during an interview with BBC yesterday, the Speaker mentioned that the Head of State is no longer in the country and is instead lodging near the island nation.

The Speaker also added that President Rajapaksa will return to Sri Lanka by Wednesday (13) and step down from presidency as planned.

However, in a telephone conversation with ANI, the Speaker claimed that he “made a mistake in the (BBC) interview” and President Rajapaksa was in fact still in the country.

President Rajapaksa has announced his resignation on Saturday (9) after a large mass of protesters stormed the official residences of the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The people blame the President for the country’s financial crisis and its economic mismanagement which has resulted in severe shortages of fuel, food and medicine for months.
