Police assure swift action

Disciplinary action will be taken against SSP Romesh Liyanage, who gave orders to assault six journalists on 9 July, Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa assured.

He added that IGP C.D. Wickramaratne has instructed to take immediate action following an investigation.

The private residence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was broken into and set on fire hours after he said he would resign when a new Government is formed on the biggest day of demonstrations, on Saturday, against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that saw crowds occupying the President’s House, the Presidential Secretariat and Temple Trees.

Six journalists were admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo with injuries after a brutal assault by Police and STF personnel on duty outside the PM’s private residence.

Following the attack, more journalists rushed to the scene and they were also obstructed by Police.
