Mass protest a warning to corrupt leaders – Gunratnam

Claiming that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP) mandate has been abolished, General Secretary of Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Kumar Gunratnam said corrupt leaders who carry out vicious agendas should learn many important lessons from the people’s struggle.

Addressing the media yesterday (10) he said that the consensus between the people is the new law.

While claiming that the Constitution is not adequate, Gunratnam said a brand-new Constitution, without distortions, should be brought to Parliament.

He said a populist Constitution should be brought. The current Constitution is not sufficient, the related power to accomplish the need has been built in the people, he said. He added that the public has achieved what was previously said to be impossible.

“A new Constitution should be brought that includes rules that will completely abolish the Executive Presidency, eliminate the possibility of using money and media power in the electoral process, create a situation where a free and fair election can be held, end to racism and oppression,” he said.

He added, “We should bring a Constitution that promotes harmony and equality in everyone. There is a need for a Constitution that will allow people to call for a mandate whenever necessary, a Constitution which confirms the basic rights of health, education and transportation.”

He said the President and the Premier were ousted because of their contribution to the downfall of Sri Lanka and condemned the use of jingoism by corrupt politicians to come to power.
