Clergy reiterate call for President’s resignation


Omalpe Sobhitha Thera said neither President Gotabaya Rajapaksa nor Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena is aware of the country’s current situation.

He said everyone responsible for the crisis do not care about the people and are lost in their own fantasies.

“We urged the Speaker to extradite Rajapaksa from wherever he is, even if he is hiding in a bunker right now. We urged him to force the President to act in accordance with the people’s mandate,” he said.

Politicians should understand what people need at this moment and act accordingly, Editor of the Catholic Newspaper ‘Gnanartha Pradeepaya,” Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando observed. 

When contacted he said that Parliament should act according to the Constitution and choose a President for a short term while forming an interim government also for a short term before holding a general election. People may then choose the leaders that they want, he noted. 

Fr. Fernando stressed on the need for Parliament to consult with the youth who led the struggle against the oppressive government and give voice to the people. 

“We are hoping that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa would resign as he says and announce his resignation officially. He has no office, no residence and no one knows of his whereabouts,” Fr. Fernando said adding that it was a mystery as to why Rajapaksa still wanted to delay leaving by two-three days when people are calling for his immediate resignation.
