BASL explains course of action

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has explained the necessary course of action to be followed upon the resignation of both the President and the Prime Minister.

Speaking at a media briefing, held yesterday afternoon (10), BASL President Saliya Pieris PC said, in order to vacate from the Presidency, Gotabaya Rajapaksa will initially have to submit a letter regarding the matter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene.

Later, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has to take over the position of President, as per the Constitution.

If, however, Wickremesinghe is unable to take over, it is then the Speaker who shall take over temporarily, for a period of one month, PC Pieris explained.

Within that month, Parliament will be required to elect a President for the remaining period of the former President’s tenure, with the elected MP needing to secure over 50 per cent of the votes.

With regard to Premier Wickremesinghe and his potential resignation, Pieris PC noted that he will have to hand in a letter of resignation to the President.

Pieris PC urged, however, that the required steps be taken as soon as possible without any delay, emphasising that Sri Lanka “cannot remain unstable for a long period of time.”
