Over 500,000 hectares of paddy land has been cultivated for the Yala Season, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
It said in the first week of June 2022, the amount of paddy land that had been cultivated was 238,000 hectares, while adding that the Department of Agriculture had targeted an area of 275,000 hectares.
However, in view of the food shortage, the area cultivated was increased to 500,000 hectares. Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera updated SLPP backbenchers on the increased paddy land cultivation.
This was during a discussion on fertiliser distribution recently. Amaraweera briefed the MPs on the Government initiative to provide urea fertiliser to farmers in the Yala Season.
MPs Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon and Rajika Wickramasinghe were also present at the discussion.
