Saranagi Silva, the women’s record holder in the long jump (6.65m), has been selected by World Athletics to compete at the World Championships with her new upgrade to the event quota of 32 athletes.
She was listed as 34th on the list, but with two athletes withdrawing prior to the World Championship, World Athletics had notified Sri Lanka athletics (SLA) about Sarangi’s qualification yesterday.
However, she has declined participating in the World Championship and is concentrating on the upcoming Commonwealth Games. She will be leaving to Turkey at the end of the week for her final preparation for the CWG with her Personal Coach who is based in Turkey.
She is the first-ever Sri Lankan to qualify for a horizontal jumping event at the World Championships.
The World Athletics Championship 2022 is set to get underway from 14 July in Eugene, USA, where obtaining visa has been a hassle even for Athletes. They are yet to receive visas with only 7 days left to the starting date.
100m runner Yupun Abeykoon, middle distance runner Gayanthika Abeyrathne and 3000m steeple chase runner Nilani Rathnayaka have qualified for the WC.
