Railways Dept incurs Rs 14M loss

The Railways Department has incurred approximately Rs 14 million in losses in the last two days because some of its employees decided to withdraw from duty and demand fuel to report to work, General Manager Railways, Dhammika Jayasundara said.

The General Manager said the loss per day when the train journeys were cancelled on 5 and 6 July was Rs 7 million.

He said the Railways Department presently earns approximately Rs 17 million, with Rs 2.5 million coming from Ordinary Season Ticket Holders.

He said the loss on the commuter side primarily affects Ordinary Season Ticket Holders. On 5 and 6 July, approximately 370 train journeys were cancelled.

More than 140 train journeys were cancelled on 5 July due to a staff withdrawal from the railway running shed. The employees claimed that the Government had not taken adequate precautions to ensure that they had enough fuel to report for duty.

As many train guards did not report for duty on 6 July due to the fuel crisis, only 50 of the 280 scheduled train journeys were completed yesterday (7).
