Shortly after the Colombo Magistrate’s Court refused to issue a Restraining Order to prevent anti-Government protesters from entering the area where the President’s House in Fort is located, on 8 and 9 July, IGP Chandana Wickramaratne urged the public, including political and religious leaders to refrain from damaging State and/or public property and causing disturbance or hindrance to the public when exercising their fundamental rights.
The IGP, issuing a special statement, said yesterday (7) the Police respect peaceful public gatherings as per the Constitution.
He further said the Police have taken the utmost measures to protect the rights of the people and all Police personnel have been informed in this regard.
The IGP also said it is the responsibility of the public to act responsibly, without causing any hindrance to the rights of other people.
