The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has condemned the police curfew imposed hours ahead of the public protests due to take place tomorrow (09).
Issuing a statement, the BASL questioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickremeratne’s authority when imposing such curfew, as “the Police Ordinance does not have a provision for the imposition of such curfew”.
Deeming the curfew as ‘blatantly illegal and a violation of fundamental rights of the people’, the BASL raised concerns that the failure to withdraw the police curfew ‘will have severe consequences for the country’.
A police curfew was declared at 09:00 PM today (08), in Nugegoda, Mt. Lavinia, Kelaniya and Negombo and the North, South and Central divisions of Colombo.
