Police will protect peaceful protesters – IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickremaratne today (07) issued a special statement with regards to Police action being taken against individuals during maa demonstrations.

Accordingly, he noted that while the Police respect the public’s rights to freedom of speech and expression, necessary action will be taken against those who damage state and/or public property and hinder the public.

Thus, Wickremeratne urged citizens to exercise their rights peacefully, within the legal framework, while all Police stations have been issued directives to protect those engaged in peaceful protests.
