Navy thwarts two illegal migration attempts


The Navy arrested 53 people who tried to migrate illegally via sea route along with two smugglers during search operations on 5 July.

The Navy conducts regular operations covering the seas and coastal areas around the island to stop illegal immigration and smuggling activities. Accordingly, on 5 July the SLNS Vijayaba, belonging to the Eastern Naval Command, conducted a special search operation in Trincomalee’s Erakkandi coastal area with the support of the Kuchchaveli Police. Accordingly, 46 people including 12 men, 11 women and 23 children were taken into custody. They were suspected to have been waiting at the beach with the intention of illegally migrating to a foreign country.

The suspects were identified as residents of Kinnia, Mootur and Kumburupiddy and were handed over to the Kuchchaveli Police for legal proceedings.

In addition, a special search operation was carried out by the SLNS Gajaba of the North-Central Naval Command in Mannar’s Thalvupadu coastal. Seven people including three men, a woman and three children, who were trying to migrate using a dinghy and two smugglers were taken into custody at Thalvupadu Beach.

The suspects were identified as residents of Colombo, Badulla, Vavuniya and Mannar and were handed over to Mannar Police for further legal proceedings.
