ICC top ranked Nissanka not picked

The draft for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) was held on Tuesday evening, with each of the five franchises allowed to pick six international players – one from each price category barring Gold and Silver. Sri Lankan players were available for all categories.

The pre-draft segment of the squad selection, however, meant that for many of the teams the top-tier draft picks had been decided well in advance of the draft proper.

The draft included players in seven price ranges:

Ruby (USD 60,000; approx LKR 21.5 million)

Sapphire
(USD 50,000; approx LKR 18 million)

Diamond A

(USD 40,000; approx LKR 14 million)

Diamond B (USD 25,000; approx LKR 9 million)

Platinum (USD 15000; approx LKR 5 million)

Gold (USD 10,000; approx LKR 3.5 million)

Silver (USD 3,000; approx LKR 1 million).

A notable omission from the draft was Sri Lanka’s highest ranked T20 International batter Pathum Nissanka, who wasn’t picked by any of the five franchises, though players like Sacha de Alwis, who has the highest T20I score at Under-19 level, was re-picked by Dambulla Giants for mysterious reasons.

The other notable omissions from the list are two openers Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando, who are both nursing injuries. Apart from them, Oshada Fernando, Lahiru Madushanka, Akila Dananjaya, Lahiru Kumara, Prabath Jayasuriya, Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando too haven’t been picked.

Overall, the draft had much better international players compared to the two previous editions, and it will of interest to see how many of them will be actually available during the commencement of LPL 2022.
