Former MP Hirunika Premachandara and at least 10 others were arrested by Fort Police during a protest held outside the President’s House in Fort, Colombo yesterday (6).

They were released on Police Bail on the same evening.

Premachandra led a protest yesterday morning demanding the resignations of the President and his Government stating that he is responsible for the prevailing economic crisis.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Weligama Organiser Rehan Jayawickrema was also among those arrested.

Premachandra who sat before the gates of the President’s House demanded the President to come outside or let her in to have a meeting.

Meanwhile, the Police fired tear gas and water cannons at a group of protesters at the Parliament entry road near Diyatha Uyana yesterday.

The protesters had tried to enter Parliament through the barricades and the Police started firing tear gas to disperse them. The protest march was organised by the joint trade unions for the protection of petroleum resources.

All the entry roads to Parliament from Polduwa Junction and the Japanese Friendship Bridge were closed for traffic due to the protest.
