General Secretary of the All Ceylon Ports General Employees Union, Niroshan Gorakanage, wrote to Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) Chairman, Dr. Charitha Herath, requesting an opportunity to make a statement regarding ongoing fraud and corruption at the Ports Authority.
Gorakanage said there is suspicion whether SLPA officials who provided statements to COPE wanted to direct public anger towards public sector employees.
He said the statement made by Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) officials at COPE recently conceals the real situation at the SLPA. He further said, remarks of SLPA officials regarding overtime allowances of port workers are incorrect. In addition, the management has presented incorrect prices before COPE in regard to expenses of meals provided to port workers and this has greatly inconvenienced them.
Further, Gorakanage said there are many other anomalies at the SLPA and they have requested to launch an investigation in this regard. The union commended the action taken by COPE to expose corruption and irregularities in public institutions.
