Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the Department of Agrarian Development to provide 50 kg of urea fertiliser at a subsidised price of Rs 10,000 to maize farmers.
He said the price of the same quantity of urea fertiliser in the open market is Rs 42,000, adding however that previously a decision was made and Cabinet approval was granted to provide 50 kg of urea fertiliser to paddy farmers at a subsidised price of Rs 10,000 and this subsidy will be extended for maize farmers.
Amaraweera added that the Ministry of Agriculture has decided to allocate 10,000 tons of the stocks of urea provided by the Indian Government for maize cultivation. The stock of urea fertiliser provided by India through the credit line has left the Oman port and is due to arrive in the country on 10 July.
He further said the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has also agreed to provide 370,000 bags of urea fertiliser for low-income farmers free of charge.
