Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake yesterday (5) said the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has launched various food security programmes titled ‘Come, let’s cultivate’ and ‘Let’s rally for food security today’.
The Mayor said that these programmes are currently in progress within the Colombo Municipal area in collaboration with the “One” volunteer professionals association.
The CMC is also running a community kitchen to feed impoverished communities in the city.
The community kitchen has been implemented by Vishaka Tilakaratne under the guidance of ‘Voice’ volunteer association and with the assistance of Kirulapone and Nagaswatte residents, Mayor Senanayake said.
“The programme is to be expanded to every part of Colombo City in the near future. Children between the age of 1 and 15, pregnant women, feeding mothers, differently-able persons, and women-headed families and socially handicapped persons are eligible for this programme,” the Mayor said.
The Public Health Department of the CMC conducted a field study within the CMC limits and identified 152 individuals with malnutrition. Steps will be taken to improve their health conditions providing them with nutritious foods, Mayor Senanayake added.
