Two remanded over bribery


Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday (4) remanded, till 11 July, the Chief Clerk of the Chenkalady, Eravurpattu PS and a Coordinating Secretary of a former State Minister, who have been charged with soliciting a bribe of Rs. 1.5 million.

The two suspects had sought the bribe in order to sell a few plots of land, coming under the purview of the said PS, at a cheaper price.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) told Chief Magistrate Amerasinghe, that the two suspects had been nabbed by their sleuths on 21 June, following a complaint lodged with the Commission.

The Bribery Commission officers informed the Court, that the two suspects had initially demanded a sum of two million rupees, but had later reduced it to Rs 1.5 million, at which point they had been arrested within the premises of the Ibrahim Hotel at Batticaloa.
