Police beef up security

Due to a leak in an oil pipeline from Grandpass-Orugodawatte to the Kelanitissa power plant, Police have beefed up security in the Orugodawatte area. Police said the repair of the pipeline is taking more than three days, and people were flocking to the scene to see what was going on. Police also said Army personnel were being dispatched to prevent any untoward incident.

However, Police noted that workers from the Ministry of Power and Energy were mending the pipeline.

Concerns were raised about the delay in implementing measures to upgrade the existing 75-year-old oil pipeline system to improve oil transportation and avoid losses incurred by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. Renovation of the existing oil pipeline has been discussed for decades, but no government took significant steps to upgrade the system, an official said.
