Military launches internal probe


The Police and Army have launched an investigation into an incident where a senior Army officer was seen assaulting a civilian at a fuel station in Yakgahapitiya, Polgahawela, Kurunegala yesterday (4).

The probe was initiated after a video of the Army officer kicking the civilian in the chest went viral on social media.The Army Media Coordinator stated that an internal investigation has been launched.

Two individuals have also been arrested in this regard.

An argument had arisen between civilians and Army officers at the Yakgahapitiya, Polgahawela IOC fuel station due to the lengthy queues, following which two Army officers had taken a civilian to a senior Army officer in charge of security at the fuel station and the latter had allegedly kicked the civilian.

Meanwhile, a Facebook campaign has been launched requesting the public to write to the United Nations Human Rights Council, calling to address the military violence against unarmed citizens amidst an economic crisis.
