Five brought before the Law


Puttalam Chief Magistrate A. S. Asela de Silva on 1 July, imposed fines of Rs 500.000 each on five suspects regarding irregularities they committed following 90 raids carried out on trade stalls within the Puttalam District last month.

Puttalam Police arrested 22 suspects. Meanwhile, five were initially produced in Court.

A source from the Consumer Affairs Authority Office of the Puttalam District said, legal action will be instituted against the remaining 17 suspects before the Chilaw and Puttalam Chief Magistrates respectively.

The main charge was selling rice at exorbitant prices violating the Government stipulated price.

Among other charges were selling expired items to consumers and failure to display prices of essentials in their trade stalls.
