Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera has directed the Department of Agriculture to purchase seed paddy for the upcoming Maha season at a cost of Rs 150 per kilogramme.
At present, the Department of Agriculture has set a price of Rs 140 for a kilogramme of seed paddy, however, the minister said this price is not fair and that it should be increased to Rs 150.
He has also directed that a Cabinet Paper be prepared.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the preparation of seed paddy required for cultivation in the 2022 Maha season will be done by purchasing rice harvests from farmers who cultivated seed paddy in the early season.
The Ministry also said the amount of seed paddy required for the season is four million bushels, with government seed paddy farms obtaining 10-12 per cent of the total requirement, and farmers obtaining the remaining amount.
The Minister of Agriculture also said he has received information that some farmers who grew seed paddy are selling their harvest to traders at a higher price to process rice.
