SL Customs thwarts attempt to smuggle gold worth nearly Rs.50M

A consignment of 2.98 Kilograms of gold was seized by Sri Lanka Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) arrivals terminal this morning (02).

Ths gold, valued at an estimate of Rs. 47,211,075, was illegally smuggled to Sri Lanka from Dubai in the form of 16 biscuits, weighing 116 grams each, together with four more pieces of gold that appeared to be molten.

The arrestee was identified as a 35-year-old resident of Dematagoda, who had arrived into Sri Lanka aboard a Flydubai flight.

While the consignment of gold was confiscated, a fine of Rs.50,000 was imposed upon the suspect.
