Sapugaskanda Refinery will close – Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said liberalising Sri Lanka’s fuel distribution will lead to the closure of the Sapugaskanda Refinery permanently.

Speaking at a meeting with CPC trade unionists, Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya together with other Opposition parties launched a protest to save it.

“We will do everything possible to save the refinery, and we will not allow the Government to destroy it. At the moment, the refinery meets 100 per cent of Sri Lanka’s kerosene needs, 50 per cent to 60 per cent of aviation fuel needs, 100 per cent of Naphtha needs, 30 per cent to 100 per cent of diesel needs, and 75 per cent to 100 per cent of furnace oil needs,” he said.

He added that the fuel crisis has been created deliberately, in a bid to liberalise the fuel market.
