Police capture 651 Kandakadu escapees


Police have arrested 651 inmates who escaped from the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre.

A total of 272 inmates had surrendered to the Rehabilitation Centre and 74 are still missing.

Director of Rehabilitation/Post Rehabilitation Assistant Branch Brigadier Priyankara Vidanagamage said that 643 inmates were produced before the Welikanda Magistrate’s Court and remanded at the Polonnaruwa prison.

He said the remaining will be produced before Court today (1).

Meanwhile, Police said they are conducting further investigations to locate the remaining escapees.

He said that more than 500 security personnel have been deployed to search for the escaped detainees. Security forces suspect that they are hiding in the Somawathiya National Park on both sides of the Sungavila Road.

The inmates had escaped from the Kandakadu Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, following a clash with soldiers on 29 June.
