Informed sources said that many patients who had been waiting in line had been severely inconvenienced due to rabies vaccines being out of stock at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle.
Many patients say that they have been forced to turn away and go to hospitals situated in areas such as Udugama, Elpitiya and Baddegama for the vaccine due to the acute shortage at Karapitiya Hospital.
According to sources, around 16 rabies infected patients are treated at Karapitiya Hospital at its rabies clinic while the monthly rabies requirement stands at 417.
When contacted, Karapitiya Hospital Director Dr. S.D.U.M. Ranga stated that the vaccines are currently out of stock and that they are directing patients to nearby hospitals due to this issue.
He expressed hope that the hospital will be restocked with sufficient rabies vaccines within the next three to four weeks.
