One of the most acclaimed karate styles in Sri Lanka, Gojukai, celebrated its 42nd anniversary at Ariyana Reach, Maharagama recently.

The occasion was graced by the President of the Sri Lanka Karate-Do Federation (SLKF) Shihan H.M. Sisira Kumara (6th Dan – S.L.K.F Sri Lanka, 5th DAN – I.K.G.A. Japan, and 4th DAN – R.K.H.S. Japan), who is also the current President of the Association. Secretary Shihan Seetha Wijewardena (6th DAN – S.L.K.F. Sri Lanka and 5th DAN – International), who had coached the Sri Lanka karate team, was also present.

Shihan Wijewardena still trains many male and female students in martial arts, mainly for self-defense, as well as for improving their skills for both local and international competitions. Wijewardena currently does her training at the Gojukai headquarters at No. 36, 1st Lane, Jambugasmulla Road, Nugegoda.

During the anniversary celebration, students who had successfully acquired necessary skills were awarded black belts (Shodan status).

Meanwhile, those who had performed and won awards at various national and international karate competitions, were presented with certificates of honour to acknowledge the contribution made to Gojukai Association. Recipients of such certificates were Akmal Thotawatta, Ushitha Pandula, Gawesh Chandimal, Abdul Safek, Niosal Perera, Sonal Akbo, Dmesser Dissanayake, M.G.S. Premakumara and Indusara Wijetunge.
