SL lifts ban imposed on ‘terrorist’ Qatar Charity

Sri Lanka has decided to lift the ban imposed on the Qatar Charity, Minister of Energy Kanchana Wijsekera announced.

During his visit to Qatar, Wijesekera met the officials of the Qatar Charity, during which he conveyed the message that Sri Lanka’s Defense Ministry had informed the Attorney General of its decision to lift the ban on the charity fund, which was imposed in 2019.

Accordingly, the Charity’s work was discussed both within Sri Lanka, and globally.

The ban was imposed in 2019, during the case against lawyer Hejaaz Hizbullah, after he was accused of being connected to the Easter Sunday Attacks of 2019.

During Hizbullah’s case, and in the aftermath of the attacks, Qatar Charity, the main charitable arm of the Qatar Government which also has a registered office in Sri Lanka, was accused of funding terrorist activites.
