The Samurdhi Employees’ Trade Union (SETU) charged that though during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, a sum of Rs 5,000 had been provided to low-income groups and Samurdhi recipients via the funds from Samurdhi Banks, the Samurdhi Development Bank has to date failed to reimburse that amount.

They alleged that due to this situation and due to funds drying up in Samurdhi Banks, it had now become difficult for these banks to continue their operations.

Union President Asela Wijesinghe said a sum of Rs 3.5 million had been obtained from each of the Samurdhi Banks.
