Introduce constitutional amendments promptly — Gunawardena

Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena said as there could be a snap General Election in Sri Lanka, the necessary constitutional amendments should be introduced to legally incorporate the recommendations of the Select Committee on changes to the election system.

He said as per the Constitution, the President is empowered to dissolve Parliament after March next year.

He expressed hope that the recommendation put forth by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Election Law Reforms could be legislated towards the staging of the long-delayed PC Poll.

Gunawardena explained that the long-overdue PC Poll has to be held before March 2023 and added that as the subject Minister, he will take steps to conduct the Poll.

Gunawardena said amendments should be introduced promptly to the election system, including the National List, mixed electoral system, by-elections, increasing representation of youths and women in Parliament, and electronic voting.
