Action plan handed over to Amaraweera


The Department of Agriculture handed over proposals with an action plan for the revival of the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka to Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera.

Chemical fertiliser imports and organic cultivation, increasing rice production in the country, promoting the cultivation of indigenous crops focusing on exports, taking measures to meet the national vegetable and fruit demand, prioritising agricultural research and development, agricultural inputs were among the proposals.

The proposals also focused on measures to reduce the misuse of pesticides and fertiliser and contained 11 short-term proposals to uplift agriculture.

Speaking at an event, Amaraweera requested the proposals aimed at increasing the income of the farming community to be implemented without delay and for everyone to be committed to make the Yala season and the forthcoming Maha season a success.

Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Rohana Pushpakumara, Director General of the Department of Agriculture Ajantha de Silva, and directors representing the respective divisions were also present. (FT)
