Parliament not on essential services list

Whilst the Government has specified a list of essential services, Parliament has not been included in it. Due to this, Parliament officials have not been able to obtain fuel from the nearest pumping station, Ceylon Today learns.

A top official at Parliament stated that a circular issued on 28 June had skipped Parliament when listing essential services, though in the past it had been included in that category. He mentioned that the issue has already been brought to the notice of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene. He warned that with Parliament sittings scheduled to get underway next week, it will be difficult to reconvene the House if its staffers are unable to report for duty for want of fuel for their vehicles.
