Omicron sub-lineages found abroad

The Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Sri Jayewardenepura University warned that a more transmissible and immune evasive Covid-19 sub-lineage of Omicron that had already affected 63 countries have been identified.

Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Sri Jayewardenepura University, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara on 27 June in a tweet said the pandemic continues while the entire country is distracted by the prevailing crisis. “The latest Covid-19 lineage BA5 is the most transmissible and immune-evasive sub lineage of omicron since the pandemic began,” he said warning that the particular sub lineage was not mild.

It had been detected in already in 63 countries but none in Sri Lanka yet, he added.
