The Cabinet has approved a proposal tabled by the Transport Minister to increase train fares and other railway charges.
The proposal was tabled upon consideration of the recent price hikes in fuel, incurring further losses to Sri Lanka’s Railway Department, as train fares have not been revised in the last five years.
Moreover, other railway charges, such as goods and postal transport fees, have not been increased in 14 years.
Thus, in a bid to minimise losses and provide better services, the Minister of Transport proposed that train fares and all other railway charges be revised.
