Gunmen kill 10 in 28 days

The 10th shooting incident, carried out by unidentified gunmen, within a period of four weeks, was reported from the Peliyagoda Police Division.

The two murders carried out on 26 June in the Middeniya and Peliyagoda Police Divisions were recorded in the Police logs as the 9th and 10th murders that had been committed within a span of 28-days. The ninth murder took place at Thorakolayaya on the Embilipitiya – Middeniya road in the Middeniya Police Division. The victim was identified as 52-year-old A. K. Manjulasiri, the owner of a funeral parlour.

The Police had recovered two T-56 rifle bullets used in the killing at the scene of the crime.

Middeniya Police said that the assailants may have arrived either by a van or on a motorcycle and that they are currently inspecting CCTV camera footage from the crime scene.

In the meantime, on the same day, another murder had been committed at Pattiya Junction, in the Peliyagoda Police Division.

The deceased there has been identified as a 32-year-old resident of Minuwangoda.

He has been known as ‘Police Attanayake’ and had served previously with the Police Department.

According to the Police he had last served at the Kandana Police Station. It is alleged that he had been engaged in the illegal drug peddling trade and due to this reason he had also been interdicted from his service.

Police said while the victim, his spouse and two-year-old child had been riding on their motorcycle, unidentified gunmen, who had followed them on a motorcycle, had shot at the victim.

Following the shooting incident, the victim and his child had been injured, but the victim had succumbed to his injuries before being admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo.

So far no suspects have been taken into custody in this regard and the Police are continuing to probe the incident whilst inspecting the CCTV camera footage captured from the crime scene.
