Sithum, Uttara excluded from World Junior team

Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) has excluded 400m runners Sithum Jayasundara and Jayeshi Uttara from the Sri Lanka Junior team for the forthcoming World Junior Athletics Championship.

Seven athletes have been selected, but only two are certain to make the trip as World Athletics will cover their expenses. SLA is now looking for funding to send the other five athletes.

Total of nine athletes achieved qualification standard for the World Junior Championship to be held in Cali, Colombia from 18 to 22 August. SLA had earlier planned to send all nine athletes, which also included the 4x400m mix relay team.

The Selection Committee later decided to omit Sithum Jayasundara and Jayeshi Uttara from the team as the two of them did not compete in the 400m final at the recently -concluded Junior National championship, which SLA considered as the final trial.

“They and their coaches were clearly instructed that participation at the Junior National Championship was compulsory despite them achieving qualification standards prior to that, as it was considered as the final trial” said Recorder and Senior Official of SLA, Saman Kumara Gunawardana.

With their exclusion, Sri Lanka’s chances of competing in the 4x400m mixed relay too will not be possible.
