Isipathana opened their season by registering victory against Science (18-9) in their schools league match worked off at Havelock Park on Friday. At the short breather Pathana led 13-6.
Winners scored three unconverted tries and a penalty, while visitors bagged three penalties.
Both teams couldn’t find their rhythm and made several handling errors which led to reduced game phases.
Full back Malith Nimsara drew first blood for Pathana with a try to take a 5-0 lead. The visitor’s fought back with a 20 metre penalty off the boot of fly half N. Kaveesha to reduce the gap (5-3). Hosts then bounced back to increase their lead with a penalty put over by full back Nimsara (8-3). The Science fly half was right on target with another 20 metre penalty to reduce the gap (8-6). Isipathana hooker Wenura Kodagoda touched down just before the short whistle to give Isipathana the lead 13-6.
In the second half both sides continued to make errors and failed to put the finishing touches. Isipathana bagged another try though scrum halve Dinusara de Costa, while visitors responded with a penalty through second half replacement D. Perera to make the final score (18-9).
Royal 22, St. Anthony’s 12
At Reid Avenue, defending League Champions Royal College pulled off a hard fought 22 points (4 tries, 1 conversion) to 12 points (2 tries, 1 conversion) win over St. Anothony’s Kandy at Royal Sports Complex.
At the short breather winners led 10-5.
