Welgama released from bribery case

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (24) ordered the release of former Minister Kumara Welgama from a corruption case file against him by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruptions (CIABOC).

The case was taken up this morning, before Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe.

CIABOC filed a case against Welgama during the Yahapalanaya regime, charging him with causing an unlawful loss of Rs.3.2 million by appointing a Deputy Chairman to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) contrary to the Transport Act.

Welgama was accused of unlawfully appointing L.A. Wimalaratne as the Deputy Chairman of the SLTB in 2010 during his tenure as the Minister of Transport, despite there not existing such a position within the SLTB.
