Kuliyapitiya skimping on school lunches

The number of pupils who do not have lunch at school in the Kuliyapitiya Education Zone is growing daily.

According to internal sources, the economic crisis has stopped parents from packing a lunch for their children to take to school. Numerous cases have been reported where students go hungry during lunch hour.

They also said that children from households with secure finances bring extra food parcels and distribute them to children who are hungry.

The school lunch programme has been in place for a while but it was discontinued owing to inflation. According to reports, some students do not bring meals to school and some even show up in class without having breakfast.

According to nutritionists, these problems harm children’s physical and mental stamina required for academic success.
