Another SL record holder leaves to settle in UAE

Vaulting Queen Sachini Perera became the second record holder to leave the island this year seeking to settle down in the United Arab Emirates. Sachini (24) was a gymnast during the early days and even competed at the Commonwealth Games 2014 before she turned to Athletics.

Taking up the Pole Vault discipline, Sachini quickly adapted to the new sport, becoming National Champion. She has broken the record several times and currently holds Sri Lanka record with a clearance of 3.71m, which she set earlier this year during the National Championship.

Sachini had high hopes for her athletic career, but recent incidents resulted in a change of mind. She was recently admitted to hospital for depression, after she was omitted from the National team that toured India. She stated she was hopeful of being selected for the tour as she was given a verbal assurance of being included in the team by the authorities, but was later omitted despite her willingness to fund her own expenses.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s Long Jump record holder of the, Amila Jayasiri, left the island to settle down in Dubai, UAE. Amila holds the Sri Lanka record with a leap of 8.15m.
