Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has agreed to allocate 125,000 litres of diesel to distribute urea fertiliser to farmers for the Yala season on a request made by Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera.
While Sri Lanka is due to receive 65,000 MT of urea fertiliser from India on 6 July, Amaraweera noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has initiated a programme to distribute the fertiliser throughout the country.
Out of this stock of fertiliser, 50,000 MT will be provided for paddy cultivation and 10,000 MT for maize cultivation and will be released to the farming community through Agrarian Service Centres and will be delivered by Lanka Commercial Fertiliser Company and Lanka Fertiliser Company with the use of over 2000 lorries.
Thereby Amaraweera in a letter to Wijesekera requested the allocation of diesel to distribute fertilizer from 10 to 15 July.
Meanwhile, Amaraweera observed that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will take steps to provide fuel required for the Yala season harvest and 247 petrol stations islandwide will be designated for the purpose.
