Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake yesterday (22) said the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) with the assistance of the World Food Programme (WFP) has granted Rs 15,000 cheques to 2,400 pregnant women residing in the Colombo city limits.
Senanayake said the cheques were presented to them at the Modara Maternity Home at an event chaired by her and Deputy Regional Director of WFP Anthea Webb and Deputy Country Director Andrea Berardo.
The Mayor said the cheques were handed over to minimise food security issues as a result of the prevailing economic crisis.
Senanayake said these cheques were handed over to pregnant women who have been registered with Modara, Maligawatta, St. Paul, Bandaranayake Mawatha, Vauxhall Street and New Bazzar maternity and child care clinics.
The cheques could be used at Cargills Food City, Senanayake added.
