Seven suspects who surrendered to Police over illegal assembly and violent incidents on 9 June were yesterday ordered to be remanded till 1 July 2022 by Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.
This was after the wanted suspects surrendered to the Maradana Police through a lawyer yesterday (22).
Lahiru Weerasekera, Rathindu Senaratne, Jagath Manuwarna, Dhammika Munasinghe, Ven. Rathkarawwe Jinarathana Thera, Eranga Gunasekera, and Jehan Appuhamy surrendered to the Maradana Police.
The Convener of Inter-University Student’s Federation (IUSF) Wasantha Mudalige and Ven. Galwewa Siridhamma Thera are yet to surrender. The Fort Police OIC had reported to the Fort Magistrate’s Court on a B report regarding nine suspects who were members of a protest rally held on 9 June that obstructed the duties of police officers by damaging government property in front of the Police Headquarters. Before surrendering to the Maradana Police, these suspects went to the Fort Police in a march with dozens of other protesters who demanded the Police to arrest them along with the suspect as they too were engaged in the protest on 9 June. However, due to the lack of space in the Fort police station the officers of the police station had reportedly instructed them to go to Maradana Police station.
